"The
boat's gentle shifting awakened me. We were anchored in
a forested cove on the southern coast of Turkey, in a region
known for at least twenty-five years as Lycia. Another sunlit
morning lay ahead: long swims, fragrant coffee and fruit,
and exploration of whatever ancient theaters, temple tombs,
and half-sunken ruins were at hand along this peaceful coast.
A large part of the country's southern coast remains one
of the unspoiled glories of the Aegean and the Mediterranean.
Where the two sea meet, their histories and cultures have
also mingled: Here Alexander made his way east: here the
Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines settled, civilized, fought,
and traded. Traces of those centuries can be found everywhere,
facing the sea from spectacular capes and bays, from fortresses
of rock, and from hidden Coves of Greta drama and beauty."
