(Lycia & Pamphylia)
(11 Nights, 12 Days)
(6 Nights on a Luxurious Gulet)
"The boat's gentle shifting awakened
me. We were anchored in a forested cove on the southern
coast of Turkey, in a region known for at least twenty-five
hundred years as Lycia. Another sunlit morning lay ahead:
long swims, fragrant coffee and fruit, and exploration
of whatever ancient theaters, temple tombs, and half-sunken
ruins were at hand along this peaceful coast. A large
part of the country's southern coast remains one of the
unspoiled glories of the Aegean and the Mediterranean.
Where the two seas meet, their histories and cultures
have also mingled: Here Alexander made his way east:
here the Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines settled,
civilized, fought, and traded. Traces of those centuries
can be found everywhere, facing the sea from spectacular
capes and bays, from fortresses of rock, and from hidden
Coves of Greta drama and beauty. "--Cruising Turkey's
Caria, Lycia and Pamphylia Coast by Deborah Alston.
Like Deborah Alston's, this journey is
one of exploration, of rest and relaxation, of
experiencing and living history. Led
by specialists in their field and augmented by input
from other experts, this tour affords us the unique
opportunity to
see and explore Anatolia from both land and sea
perspectives and is also a chance to enjoy a journey by
sea. Each day will present a new discovery as we explore
the dazzling ruins of Lycian and Pamphylian cities, and
remote fishing villages along the shore. There will be
leisure time each day to hike to unexplored ruins, swim
in the crystal clear water of the Western Mediterranean,
or simply snooze on deck. And also each day, we will
enjoy informal lectures on the culture, archaeology, and
history of Turkey.
