I have known Iffet Ozgonul for many years and respect her knowledge and enthusiasm for Turkey's rich and varied culture and the professionalism with which she shows her country to visitors. I had the pleasure of travelling with her and other Turkish friends in October 2006. During an excellent week we visited some remarkable archaeological and historical sites in the south-east of Turkey. Based in the towns of Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Mardin and Diyarbakir we explored the remarkable Hittite sculptures of Yesemek, the dramatic site of Zeugma whose brilliant Roman mosaics are now safely preserved in the museum at Gaziantep, the early Islamic buildings of Harran, the lovely Syrian churches around Mardin and much more. As we travelled we enjoyed the help and hospitality of Turkish experts working on the archaeology of the area.

Before I travelled with Iffet I spent a week in Istanbul whose history and culture I was able to introduce to a friend from Edinburgh, Margaret Aspen. This was her first visit. Together we explored the main Byzantine and Ottoman monuments of the city - the great basilica of Aya Sofya, the Topkapi Palace, the great mosques of Suleimaniye and the famous "Blue Mosque - masterpieces of the achievements of the architects of the 16th and 17th centuries. We also enjoyed some of Istanbul's excellent museums - the Turkish and Islamic Art Museum, and the charming Sadberk Hanim Museum far away on the European side of the Bosphorus, and the splendid palaces of the 19th century - Dolmabahce and Beylerbeyi, which are now fully open to the public. Margaret had also asked to meet Turkish people. I was glad to introduce her both to Iffet and her colleagues, and also to old and new personal friends of mine.

We all had a wonderful time on our Turkey vacation and I would love to share some thoughts. The trip was well organized maximizing the time each day. Each day still remained flexible to include places and things of interest to each of us. Our guide, Ergul was extremely knowledgeable in history, art, religion, and politics. We seldom stumped her with our questions. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was "easy" to be around. I particularly enjoyed the attention paid to restaurant and eating stops. We experienced a variety of eating adventures and styles that we all enjoyed. It was GREAT

Iffet thanks again for the great organisation and I am sure more trips will follow ; David is very good at organising and I'm sure you will hear from him. Look forward to seeing your new brochure but your great talent is organising just what we want! We all got back safely to find that our part of England was flooded and the traffic jams beat the Istanbul jams! It took us nearly two hours to get home from the airport - a journey that usually takes forty minutes, and that was with me knowing the back routes! Now it is sunny and the birds are singing but we are now back to normal - doing the shopping and household chores like the washing.

Regards
Jennifer

Dear Iffet, We arrived home safely, yesterday, Thursday, after a long flight. Everything was all right, with the exception of the ground staff of Alitalia (never again) where I was told (in Milano) to "keep quiet". Warn passengers about the carry-on luggage: Ponds cream, Voltaren ointment, are now terrorist weapons and were thrown in the garbage (on USA-bound flights). We wanted to thank you once more for the exceptional reception and superlative program you arranged for us, George and Violet, back in Forest Hills, New York

It was lovely seeing you again in Istanbul, and I want to thank you for everything you did for us. I'm so glad we had time, you and I, to chat about Istanbul in the 1920s. The bit about the White Russian Aristocrats is particularly interesting. It will all make for a good scene.
I shall never forget our Rose Oil adventure! You will be happy to know that they went safely with me to Paris and on to NY without accident.

I hope we see each other in the near future -- please let us know if you are coming to NY. I'm glad Ismet liked the hat. I'll be sending you some books for him later. Right now, I'm burried under manuscript again!

Firstly could I say how wonderful it was to incorporate Istanbul back into our trip. The boys loved it. Can I also say how wonderful it was to have Gouldan as our guide. She was cheerful, knowledgeable, always helpful and very good company. She is in my opinion a wonderful ambassador for Turkey. We would be most happy to avail of her services again next year.

We shall be in contact soon when we have finalised details for our trip next year.

Dear Iffet
Graham & I arrived home on Monday June 5th & tomorrow leave again for a 2 week trip to Malawi & Zambia. This trip will not be about art, culture & antiquity but will all be wild life orientated with birding, walking & game watching, fishing & snorkelling. In other words very different from the marvellous couple of days that we spent with you in Istanbul.

We loved the time that we had with you in Istanbul. Thank you so much for all that you did to make us so welcome & to make our stay so very special. We will never forget your kindness to us or the incredible time & effort that you made to make our stay so totally unforgettable. I only hope that one day we can return some of your generous hospitality here in South Africa.

With best wishes & love from us both,
Jill

We had a wonderful trip. Mehmet was very good, even though he has done it many times. He was unfailingly polite, discreet and helpful as well as being unobtrusive. Rob will undoubtedly have his own comments but generally we thought the hotels were interesting, comfortable, charming and scenic-off the beaten track.

Thank you again for a wonderful trip.

In May 2005 and 2006, I organized and led a study tour of archaeological sites in Aegean and central Turkey. On both occasions the participants were adult students from the University of Sussex, Centre for Continuing Education. The organization of both tours was first class and full credit must go to Peten Travels for all their hard work in making sure we had nothing but the best hotels, with great locations and accommodation and a fully equipped new luxury coach with a very considerate driver for the entire tour. Our Turkish guide was very knowledgeable and very friendly and consequently we worked well together. All of the tour participants were extremely complimentary to me and David about all the arrangements on the tour, but I know that was mainly due to you and Peten Travels – so thank you once again for doing a really great job. We hope to be back again soon to visit your lovely country and lovely people.

Dear Iffet,

So many thanks to make that I am not sure where to start. So first, thank you and Birgil for my Birthday present and card. Most unexpected - especially as I try and keep my advancing of the years at bay - but most kind of you. I shall enjoy drinking the wine.
Secondly, thank you for the arrangements with Korfez. It was a delightful choice with superb service and excellent food and wines. My compliments to the owners they run a lovely restaurant in a stunning position. It was without doubt a superb way to share the final evening of what has been a superb tour. A brilliant choice enjoyed by everybody (and they are a discerning group!).

Finally my thanks for all of the other arrangements and the packs that you put into each guests room (nice touch). Everything worked perfectly.
I settled the bill at the restaurant on the night so just the outstanding bills for the walking tours, Bosphorus cruise etc to come. Do please forward your invoice when it is ready.

Once again my thanks,
Yours,
Nigel Durant
